Houston TX is one of my favorite cities in the United States. On a recent visit, I was on a stroll through the national cemetery and chatted with some family members who were paying their respects to deceased relatives buried at upright monuments and flat markers in the memorial park. These family members had great pride in their choice of memorial park, but were also frustrated at the lack of information about memorial park options in the Texas area.
A lot of the information out there is published by funeral home customer service staff, claiming to have the best price on upright monuments, granite monuments, private mausoleums, flat grave markers, and other memorial items.
This article will instead explore various memorial sites scattered throughout the city of Houston TX, in the United States. In the world of fashion, few accessories offer the same blend of whimsy and sophistication as the bow tie. While traditionally reserved for formal events, wearing bow ties casually has emerged as a good idea that allows individuals to express their personal style in everyday settings.
In this blog post, we’ll look at the best ways of effortlessly incorporating different styles of bow ties into your casual outfit, exploring tips, inspirations, and the undeniable charm of this iconic accessory when it’s taken off formal wear and onto the streets of everyday fashion. Whether you’re dressing up for a special occasion or looking for a great look with plain shirts and a casual outfit, the bow tie is the perfect way to elevate your personal style.
Is it okay to wear pre-tied bow ties?
Pre-tied bow ties have become a go-to choice for many, especially at formal events where achieving a flawless self-tie bow tie can be a daunting task. These readily available accessories, in different patterns, colors, and styles, are an easy way to dress up shirt collars with a touch of sophistication. The general rule of thumb is that pre-tied bow ties are the ideal solution when you need to appear well-groomed and refined at a moment’s notice. They not only ensure a consistent and neatly tied knot but also save you valuable time and effort in preparation for formal events.
Still, it’s important to remember that some bow tie aficionados argue that pre-tied bow ties, while convenient, lack the authenticity and character of a self-tie bow tie. The art of tying one’s own bow tie is considered a skill worth mastering, and it can add a personal touch to your attire, elevating your look beyond the standard pre-tied options. Nevertheless, for those seeking a balance between style and convenience, pre-tied bow ties remain a popular choice, particularly when dressing for formal events where the perfect knot on your shirt collar is of utmost importance.
Is the clip-on bow tie a worthy elegant accessory?
Breaking the general rule that self-tied bow ties are the only way to go, choosing a clip-on bow tie can be a good idea for many reasons. For starters, they offer an easy way to achieve a great look without the fuss of tying the perfect bow, making them an excellent choice for individuals who aren’t great with bow tying. They can add a touch of personal style to plain shirts, especially at formal occasions where black tie dress code is crucial. Following a few simple rules when selecting and wearing a clip-on bow tie ensures that it becomes a great choice for achieving a polished and hassle-free appearance at any special occasion.
Clip-on bow ties are versatile accessories that can be worn with confidence, offering a little bit of flexibility while still maintaining an elegant appearance. Whether you’re new to bow ties or simply prefer the convenience they offer, they are the perfect bow tie option for those who want to embrace their personal style while respecting formal dress code. So, while self-tied bow ties have their charm, don’t hesitate to make a clip-on bow tie a part of your wardrobe for those formal occasions where achieving a great look is essential.
The fine line between formal wear and a casual outfit
A black bow tie is the epitome of formal elegance, making it the ideal choice for formal events and black tie occasions. Adorning your shirt collar with this classic accessory is a good way to achieve a great look that exudes sophistication and style at any special occasion. Whether you’re attending a black tie event or any other formal occasion, the black bow tie remains a timeless symbol of a sophisticated man’s wardrobe.
As a general rule, the bow tie may be associated with formal wear, but incorporating it into a casual outfit can be a good idea for adding a touch of personal style to a more relaxed look. Pairing a clip-on bow tie with plain shirts is the best way to achieve a great look in a casual setting or for casual events like Casual Friday. By following a few simple rules, you can effortlessly master the art of donning a bow tie in a more relaxed setting, allowing your unique style to shine in an easy and fashionable way.
Simple rules for rocking a bow tie in a casual setting
Unlocking the charm of casual bow tie fashion is as easy as following three simple rules:
Keep it relaxed: Opt for a clip-on bow tie to maintain a laid-back vibe.
Pair with plain shirts: Solid colors or different patterns work best for casual occasions.
Express your style: Use the bow tie to showcase your personal style and add a unique touch to your casual outfit.
Basic rules around wearing a black bow tie
A black bow tie is the epitome of formal wear and is traditionally worn at formal events, black tie events, and other special occasions, elevating a formal suit to its maximum level of sophistication. Paired with a crisp dress shirt, it not only completes the formal look but also ensures a great look for any formal occasion. To add an extra touch of elegance, consider coordinating it with pocket squares for that impeccable finishing touch at formal occasions and special events.
As a general rule, it’s best to reserve the black tie for formal events and special occasions, where it complements a dress shirt and adds a little bit of sophistication for a great look. Wearing it with plain shirts can be a good idea for those who want to experiment with different styles, but it may not be the best way to achieve a great look in a casual outfit or at casual events. In such cases, opting for regular ties with a casual shirt is a great way to maintain a more relaxed and versatile appearance.
Different styles of bow ties
Bow ties come in various styles, each with its unique charm. The classic self-tie bow tie, famously donned by fashion icons like Winston Churchill and Fred Astaire, exudes timeless elegance. On the other hand, pre-tied bow ties, available in a wide range of colors and patterns, offer a convenient alternative for those who prefer ready-made bow ties with the classic butterfly shape.
Another style to consider is the clip-on bow tie, perfect for those who want the appearance of a real bow tie without the hassle of tying it themselves. These versatile accessories come in an array of bright colors and are an excellent choice for adding a pop of personality to a formal suit or sport coat. Regardless of your preference, whether it’s the self-tied bow tie with its adjustable width of the knot or the ready-made clip-on bow tie with its easy-to-wear long end, there’s a bow tie style to suit every taste and occasion, from the red bow tie for a touch of flair to the traditional black bow tie for formal events.
Final thoughts about wearing a bow tie casually
In conclusion, bow ties are versatile accessories that transcend formal wear and have found their way into casual outfits with flair. Whether you’re dressing up for formal events or seeking a good way to express your personal style in a casual setting, there are different styles of bow ties to suit every taste.
From the traditional black tie for formal occasions to bright colors and patterns that add a pop of personality to plain shirts, bow ties offer an easy way to achieve a great look while showcasing your individuality. So, no matter the occasion, embrace the bow tie as your personal style statement and discover the best way to elevate your outfit with elegance and charm.

What are the main differences between Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines?
Here are the five main differences between Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines:
Alaska Airlines is Pacific Northwest based. Delta Airlines hubs are across the continental United States.
Delta Airlines has international flights and domestic flights. Alaska Airlines mainly offers domestic flights.
Both American airlines have frequent flyer programs. Delta Airlines is a founding member of the SkyTeam Alliance and Alaska Airlines is a member of the OneWorld Alliance.
Alaska Airlines is a smaller company, while Delta Airlines is one of the largest airlines in the continental United States.
Delta Airlines is one of the traditional carriers, while Alaska Airlines is one of the low-cost carriers.
In recent years, these two American Airlines have expanded their capacity and each offers some really great services in basic economy. Read on to learn more about Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines to decide which of these American airlines is the clear winner for you.
Who’s the clear winner if I have to choose between Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines?
Delta Airlines is known for being the most punctual of the major airlines in the continental United States. However, the Delta SkyMiles Program isn’t all that rewarding (unless you’re a SkyMiles member with elite status). It’s the clear winner if you’re looking for a large airline with high customer satisfaction for on-time performance.
Alaska Airlines falls slightly behind Delta Airlines for its on-time performance. However, it is known for its solid customer service. Alaska Airlines cabin crew are known for providing better customer service than the airline industry standard. Alaska Air Group is also known for having one of the best frequent flyer programs of the American airlines.
What else should I consider if I need to choose between Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines?
If you’d prefer supporting a smaller company, and your travels are within the Western United States, then Alaska Airlines is a great choice. Alaska Airlines’ main hub at Seattle-Tacoma International airport makes it the best airline for people living in the Pacific Northwest. Alaska Air group also offers plenty of domestic flights out of Los Angeles International Airport.
If you prefer traditional carriers, Delta Airlines might be a better choice. They have flights all over the continental United States as well as plenty of long-haul flights to international destinations from their numerous hubs. Delta is a major airline, with international flights and domestic flights out of its hubs at Seattle-Tacoma International airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Salt Lake City, and other airports around the continental United States.
What are the best things about the Alaska Airlines loyalty program?
These five things make Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan loyalty program one of the best frequent flyer programs in the airline industry:
Alaska Airlines is part of the OneWorld Alliance. This means that you can use Mileage Plan points to fly on a network or more than ten major airlines.
Stopovers are allowed on Mileage Plan reward tickets at no additional cost. You can even book stopovers on one-way Mileage Plan reward bookings. This is uncommon with frequent flyer program reward bookings.
Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan points have amongst the highest value of any loyalty program points in the airline industry. They are currently valued at about 1.8 cents per mile.
Alaska Airlines offers plenty of flights from the continental United States to some of the lesser-known Hawaiian destinations. Since Hawaii is one of the most common loyalty program award bookings, you’re more likely to find space with Mileage Plan.
Mileage Plan points never expire. To keep your Alaska Airlines points from expiring, simply make sure that your Mileage Plan account isn’t inactive for more than two years.
What are the best things about Delta Airlines loyalty program?
These are the four best things about the Delta SkyMiles loyalty program:
Delta Airlines is a founding member of the SkyTeam Alliance; being a SkyMiles member means you’ll have access to basic economy and first class seats on 18 partner airlines.
Delta miles are easy to earn. Many different banks offer Delta Airlines credit cards, and there are some pretty sweet sign up bonuses available.
You can make progress toward elite status without even flying. This is not common in the airline industry. Some of the co-branded Delta Airlines American Express cards allow you to make progress toward elite medallion status without flying.
Sometimes Delta Airlines runs sales for SkyMiles members. You can book flights for as little as 5000 SkyMiles points per flight segment.
Delta Airlines vs Alaska Airlines: which of these American airlines is better for International Flights?
While Alaska Airlines is known for its fun outgoing cabin crew and high customer satisfaction, it has a limited offering of International flights. From the Alaska Airlines hubs in the Pacific Northwest, you can fly to a few major western Canadian cities. Beyond these international flights, the Alaska Air Group also serves Mexico City, resort destinations in Mexico, and Costa Rica.
Alaska Airlines mainline service is within the continental United States and to Hawaii. For Mileage Plan members, however, points can be redeemed on any OneWorld Alliance airline. This gives you a lot of options when it comes to international flights.
You can also book cash fares on domestic flights with Alaska Airlines with connections to international flights with OneWorld Alliance partners. For example, you could book a flight from Seattle-Tacoma International to Hong Kong with Alaska Airlines. Your first segment might bring you to San Francisco on a plane operated by Alaska Airlines, connecting to Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific. Alaska Airlines OneWorld Alliance partnership makes for a really seamless connection.
Delta Airlines is the clear winner between these two major airlines when it comes to the most international flights. Delta Airlines offers many different long-haul flights from its hubs across the continental United States. Long-haul flights to Asia are more common from the western United States and airports like Los Angeles International airport, Seattle-Tacoma International, or San Francisco. While long-haul flights to Europe are more common from the East Coast.
If you’re a SkyMiles member flying on an international flight, you might consider using your Delta miles to get yourself out of the main cabin. On long-haul flights, Delta Airlines isn’t known for having the best basic economy service. Sometimes an upgrade to a higher class of service won’t cost you that many points. And in my opinion, it’s worth it for the first class seats with full recline, better customer service, and overall superior in-flight experience.
Delta Airlines vs Alaska Airlines: which of these American airlines is better for domestic flights?
If your travels won’t see you leaving the continental United States, there are some additional considerations that you should make before choosing between Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines.
Your point of departure and destination are the first consideration. If you’ll be flying from (or to) airports such as Seattle-Tacoma International, Portland, or anywhere else in the Pacific Northwest, chances are that you’ll have better options with Alaska Airlines. Alaska Airlines is a large airline in the Pacific Northwest, and throughout much of the western continental United States. For this reason, I recommend Alaska Airlines if you’re flying to or from these areas.
For much of the rest of the continental United States, you’ll find airports that are dominated by either United Airlines or Delta Airlines. Airports like Salt Lake City and Atlanta are major hubs from Delta Airlines. You’re likely to experience better customer service and on-time performance if you opt for Delta Airlines in these regions of the continental United States.
Unfortunately, there is no clear winner between Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines when it comes to domestic flights. In addition to origin and destination of travel, you should think about your preferred loyalty program, credit card affiliations, and airport services.
Is Alaska Airlines one of the low-cost carriers in the United States?
While Alaska Airlines is a full service airline, they technically fall into the category of low-cost carriers. This is especially apparent with Alaska Airlines in-flight experience. You won’t find video screens, or meal services on long-haul flights. Alaska Air Group focuses instead on offering low fares and budget friendly flights to its customers.
Alaska Airlines flies an all-Boeing fleet of 737 aircraft. This is another way in which low-cost carriers like Alaska Airlines cut costs. Unless you carry an Alaska Airlines branded credit card, have elite status, or are travelling in first class, your first bag won’t fly for free. This is yet another way that low-cost carriers like Alaska Airlines cut costs. In fact, most baggage tagging and pre-security luggage handling for Alaska flights out of Seattle-Tacoma International are done in a self-service style, meaning that you’re actually paying to tag and check your own luggage.
What are the less noticeable differences between traditional carriers and low-cost carriers?
Here are three often overlooked differences between low-cost carriers like Alaska Airlines and traditional carriers like Delta Airlines:
Low-cost carriers like Alaska Airlines focus on route profitability, meaning they’re motivated to fill all of their domestic flights and international flights. Whereas traditional carriers like Delta Airlines sometimes let a marginal route continue to exist, if it adds more passengers to connecting flights through their hub airports.
Low-cost carriers like Alaska Airlines will fly a single aircraft type, often the Boeing 737. Traditional carriers like Delta Airlines will have multiple types of aircraft in their fleet.
Low-cost carriers often rely on add-on fees to make money, as they charge lower airfares. Traditional carriers like Delta Airlines include most fees within their ticket price, relying on other business avenues like cargo services.
In conclusion, there are some pretty big differences between Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines. While there are many different factors to consider when making the choice between these two major airlines, it’s not always possible to predict where you’ll get the best customer service.
I’ve usually been happy travelling with both Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines. Although, on a recent trip to Mexico, I was surprised to experience less than solid customer service from the Alaska Air Group. Check back soon for a post about how to best pack for a trip to Tulum, Mexico. Even still, when interacting with hard working ground or cabin crew, I always say that sugar goes a lot further than vinegar! Sometimes having a good attitude and friendly demeanour will create a positive in-flight experience regardless of the airline. And besides, you never know if it will land you free food, a free checked bag, or even a free upgrade to first class seats (unlikely, but worth a try!).
If your travels include Alaska Airlines, consider venturing north to Vancouver Island. Alaska Airlines is the only American airline to offer daily flights between Seattle-Tacoma International and Victoria International Airport. Before COVID-19, Delta Airlines also flew international flights between Seattle-Tacoma International and Victoria, BC. For the time being, Alaska Air Group is your only option. It’s a quick trip to one of the most beautiful international destinations served by Alaska Airlines. Here you’ll find some of the Pacific Northwest’s best beaches in the beautiful cities of Victoria and Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada.
Whether you’re looking for sandy beaches for swimming at high tide, a grassy park with picnic tables, or a rocky beach to explore at low tide, the City of Nanaimo is a great place to visit. Read on to learn about the best Nanaimo beaches, as well as some of Vancouver Island’s best beaches.
The best Nanaimo beaches at low tide
The four best Nanaimo beaches for low tide are found in central and north Nanaimo:
Departure Bay Beach
Piper’s Lagoon Park
Invermere Beach
Blueback Beach
What makes Departure Bay Beach a great place to go at low tide?
Departure Bay Beach’s proximity to the ferry terminal, sandy beaches, and ease of shore access at low tide make it a great place to start your Nanaimo beaches adventure.
Not only are the sandy beaches of Departure Bay are great place to explore at low tide, they’re also a good first stop in the City of Nanaimo. As you leave the Departure Bay Ferry Terminal, follow Departure Bay Road to Kinsmen Park. This grassy park has picnic tables, and a small parking lot, with plenty more angled parking along Departure Bay Road. The first thing you’ll notice is the great view back toward the ferry terminal. At low tide, Departure Bay offers warm shallow waters, which are perfect for young children looking for sea life in the intertidal zone.
What makes Piper’s Lagoon a great place to go at low tide?
At low tide, the rocky beach on the Pacific Ocean side of Piper’s Lagoon Park becomes a sandy beach and a great place for swimming.
Piper’s Lagoon Park is a great place for viewing birds at both high tide and low tide. It’s also the perfect place to kick back and relax on a rocky beach with a great view. Piper’s Lagoon Park is only a little further along Departure Bay Road. At Hammond Bay Road, follow the signs toward Piper’s Lagoon Park. At high tide, Piper’s Lagoon Park is a perfect place to go for either a short walk, or a long walk.
The ocean side of Piper’s Lagoon Park has rocky beach and is the perfect spot to sit if you’re looking for a great view across the Strait of Georgia toward the mainland of British Columbia. The inland side of the main trail at Piper’s Lagoon Park is bordered by Page Lagoon, the name of the lagoon itself. At high tide, this protected lagoon is a great place to view marine life.
At low tide, Page Lagoon becomes somewhat of a mudflat. At the north end of the main trail, you’ll find a protected rocky beach looking toward north Nanaimo. This is a great spot to sit and relax with the protected Pacific Ocean to one side, and the shores of Page Lagoon to the other.
What makes Invermere Beach a great place at low tide?
Invermere Beach is one of the largest sandy beaches in North Nanaimo. At low tide, it’s the perfect place for a long walk.
For easy access to Invermere Beach, drive to the end of Invermere Road in North Nanaimo. You won’t be disappointed by what this beautiful sandy beach has to offer at low tide. It’s the perfect place for young children to run around in warm shallow waters. Invermere Beach is also popular with dog walkers, as it’s considered an off-leash area.
This beach has easy access with a small parking lot, from which it’s a short walk down to Invermere Beach. At low tide, the warm sandy waters of Invermere Beach are not unlike what you’ll find beyond North Nanaimo, at Parksville Beach.
What makes Blueback Beach a great place at low tide?
Another of the largest sandy beaches in North Nanaimo, Blueback Beach is a great spot for a long beach walk, or to enjoy warm shallow waters at low tide.
To access this great spot in North Nanaimo, head to the end of Blueback Road. Access to the sandy beaches requires navigating some steep terrain, but it’s well worth the descent. Here you’ll enjoy a great view of North Nanaimo and across the Strait of Georgia to the mainland of British Columbia.
Blueback Beach actually connects to Invermere Beach, so if one of these two great low tide sandy beaches seems too busy for your liking, simply head to the other. At low tide, the warm sandy waters of Blueback Beach are not unlike what you’ll find beyond North Nanaimo, at Qualicum Beach or Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park.
Should I visit Neck Point Park at low tide?
Neck Point Park is a great place for a long walk along beautiful trails. It also offers a great view east toward the mainland of British Columbia. While this North Nanaimo park is a popular spot, it’s not a great place for enjoying sandy beaches at low tide. Neck Point Park has a rocky beach, and isn’t really all that remarkable at low tide. However, it’s a great place to enjoy a great view of the coastal mountains, or to take advantage of the grassy park grounds and picnic tables.
Are there any great sandy beaches beyond North Nanaimo?
Maffeo Sutton Park is a great place to visit if you’re in downtown Nanaimo. This city park is a great spot for young children as it offers playgrounds, picnic tables, and a grassy park.
At low tide, Maffeo Sutton Park’s Lana Lagoon is a great place for young children to explore sandy beaches and look around for marine life that live in shallow tidal pools. Lana Lagoon is completely protected from the waves of the Pacific Ocean. It’s one of the best Nanaimo beaches for young children. There is a large parking lot within easy walking distance of Maffeo Sutton Park and Lana Lagoon. It’s also a perfect place for a long walk, as the City of Nanaimo has a harbourside walking path that runs right through Maffeo Sutton Park.
Westwood Lake Park is a great spot to enjoy sandy beaches and fresh water on the western edge of the City of Nanaimo. It’s the perfect place for families with young children.
While the City of Nanaimo is known for the Pacific ocean and low tide sandy beaches, it is also home to some great fresh water sandy beaches. Westwood Lake Park is one of these, offering picnic tables, sandy beaches, and a grassy park. It’s a great place for swimming on a hot summer day, and also a popular spot for a long walk. Westwood Lake Park has a four mile long circuit trail, the ideal place for a walk through the shady forest on a hot summer day.
Long Lake Park is another fresh water popular spot, in the heart of the City of Nanaimo. It’s the perfect spot for a quick stop at a sandy beach on your way to North Nanaimo, Qualicum Beach, and beyond.
The main access points are on the south end of Long Lake. Loudon Park is one of these spots, offering sandy beaches, tree-shaded picnic areas, and a grassy park. This is the perfect place for a picnic followed by a quick fresh water swim. Long Lake definitely has more of an urban feel to it, but it’s still a great place for fresh water sandy beaches in the City of Nanaimo.
Is it worth stopping in the City of Nanaimo on my way to Qualicum Beach or Parksville Beach?
The City of Nanaimo is a great place to stop and explore beautiful sandy beaches, fresh water lakes, and some of the most wonderful natural beauty in North America. With plenty of sandy beaches, Nanaimo is the perfect place to explore for a day or two.
Many tourists who visit Vancouver Island spend little time in the City of Nanaimo after they leave the ferry terminal. This is a shame, as the City of Nanaimo has much to offer. It’s one of the fastest growing cities in British Columbia, and North America for that matter! And with so much natural beauty, it’s easy to see why.
Direct flights from Houston to New York take about three hours from gate to gate. But your choice of arrival airports in New York can affect your actual travel time, as transit into the Big Apple can be quite long.
New York has three main arrival airports. Your choice of airport won’t really affect your overall flight distance or flight time by very much. But each arrival airports’ proximity to New York is different. Keep this in mind when thinking about the travel time between Houston and New York City.
What are the different arrival airports in New York?
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is in nearby Newark, New Jersey. Newark is a United Airlines hub. Since Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport is also a United Airlines hub, flights between the two are common. United Airlines is one of the most popular airlines for travel from Houston to New York City. New Jersey transit offers frequent train service between Neward and New York City. This means you’ll be able to count on a punctual arrival in New York.
LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is the closest to New York City, at only eight nautical miles from Manhattan. LGA is serviced by all of the most popular airlines, but Delta Airlines has a particularly large presence at this airport. American Airlines also has frequent flights between Houston and New York LaGuardia. LGA is the most difficult of the New York airports for access; most people take a cab between LaGuardia and New York. Keep this in mind when planning out your overall travel time from Houston to New York. An LGA arrival on the East Coast will likely mean a long cab ride into the city.
John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is New York City’s third, but not its smallest airport. JFK serves more than 70 airlines, with plenty of connections to other parts of the United States, and abroad. Travelers with international destinations with carriers such as Air New Zealand, or Johannesburg flight tickets will find themselves connecting through JFK, not LGA or EWR. JFK is New York City’s airport for JetBlue Airways, one of the more popular American Airlines for flights within the United States. John F. Kennedy International Airport is know for being New York City’s best airport for shopping, lounges, and food.
What’s the flight distance to New York?
Direct flights between Houston and New York City’s Newark Airport cover 1,399 miles. Direct flight’s to John F. Kennedy International Airport have a flight distance of 1,414 miles, while the flight distance to LaGuardia International Airport is slightly longer, at 1,422 miles.
Which of the New York arrival airports has the most direct flights from Houston?
It’s almost a tie between LaGuardia and Newark. United Airlines fans will have more luck finding direct flights to Newark’s Liberty International Airport. And those who choose to travel with Amercian Airlines or Delta Airlines will find more direct flight options into LaGuardia. Budget carrier Spirit Airlines offers flights to both LaGuardia and Newark.
Direct New York flights into John F. Kennedy International Airport are less common. If you have a connection beyond the United States, keep in mind that the next nearest airports could be a couple of hours away due to New York traffic. International-bound travellers should look around for connections from Houston directly to JFK, it’s not worth booking the cheapest fare if it means transiting between LaGuardia International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport during Big Apple rush hour!
What’s the earliest flight between Houston and New York?
United Airlines offers the earliest direct flight to New York. Its 6:00 am departure arrives in Newark at 10:30 am, while it’s 7:00 am departure arrives just before noon. Both direct flight options with United Airlines operate on a Boeing 737 aircraft type. Delta Airlines also offers a 7am departure, for those looking to arrive into LaGuardia International Airport. This direct flight will also land you in New York just before noon, on an Airbus 220 aircraft type.
If you’d rather travel from Houston’s Hobby Airport, Southwest has a 7:00am departure to LaGuardia, arriving moments after the morning Delta Airlines service.
Do I need to book with United Airlines if I want a direct flight from Houston to New York?
Although Houston’s IAH airport is home to United Airlines, several other commercial airlines, including Delta Air Lines and Spirit Airlines offer direct flights to New York City’s three main arrival airports.
While United Airlines offers the earliest flight from Houston to New York, with a 6am departure from George Bush Intercontinental Airport, arriving into Newark at 10:30am with a travel time of three hours and 30 minutes from gate to gate, there are options with Delta Airlines and Southwest Airlines. But if you need to be in New York in time for a late morning meeting, United Airlines is one of the best places to book your direct flight. Otherwise, both Delta Airlines, American Airlines, and all the other most popular airlines offer direct flights to New York throughout the day.
When can I find the cheapest fare to New York?
There are a lot of factors affecting the price of tickets to New York. Your choice of arrival airport in one, as is your choice of airline. All of the most popular airlines have sales at different times, so the best bet is to hunt around until you find the cheapest fare. Sometimes opting for non direct flights can save you a bit of money as well.

In my experience, if you’re pressed for time to get yourself to a meeting in Houston, you might get a more convenient arrival gate if you’re flying United Airlines. Southern Texas is one of my favorite parts of the United States. Whether you’re looking to plan a fun road trip, or you have a brief stopover from an international flight, there’s plenty to see and do in this beautiful region of the United States.
If you have a little bit of time to spare, I highly recommend a visit to San Antonio. But you can easily stay longer, as there’s plenty to see and do.

After United Airlines, Southwest Airlines offers the next most direct flights. If you’re connecting from an international flight, this can be challenging as Southwest Airlines operations at William P. Hobby Airport require somewhat of a road trip, at least 40 minutes by car.

This aircraft type boasts an average speed of 514 miles per hour. With no time difference between the cities of Houston and San Antonio, United Airlines direct flights offer the optimal travel time.
I personally prefer using United Airlines over other carriers like Southwest Airlines or Spririt Airlines as they are members of the Star Alliance partnership. As a Super Elite flyer with Air Canada, also part of the Star Alliance, I can earn status qualifying miles on flights with United Airlines. I can also access lounges and other priority services. So even though George Bush Intercontinental Airport isn’t the nearest airport to central Houston, it’s worth the extra driving distance for the additional perks.
What is the driving distance from San Antonio International Airport into the city?
San Antonio International Airport is relatively closer to downtown than its cousin, George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Depending upon time of day and traffic, the road trip takes around ten to 15 minutes. The driving distance is just under eight miles, slightly less as the crow flies. This train offers the most direct route to downtown, with a consistent travel time between the two points, regardless of traffic.
Is it worth stopping over in Texas on your next international flight connection?
I would definitely recommend taking the time to explore this fascinating region of the United States. Houston to San Antonio offers the appeal of short travel time, great sights, and a good public transportation option once you arrive. If your time permits, consider going to North Texas to take in the sights of Dallas and surrounding regions. If you find yourself with time to spare at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport in the spring, consider hopping on a direct flight with United Airlines or Spirit Airlines to Dallas to take in the famous tulip season at Pilot Point Texas. Here’s a post about a recent excursion I made to North Texas. If you’ve had other Texas road trip experiences, I’d love to hear about them in the comments below!
In short, you can bring as much toothpaste as you want in your checked baggage. Whether it’s prescription toothpaste, travel-sized toothpaste, or regular old toothpaste, the TSA rules don’t prevent you from packing it in your checked baggage. It’s a good idea to put it in a toiletry bag, or a clear plastic bag inside your checked baggage, in case of leaks. You don’t want to arrive at your final destination with a toothpaste mess inside your checked baggage.
How much toothpaste can you pack in your carry-on luggage?
The TSA’s 3-1-1 rule is really helpful if you’re wondering if your tube of toothpaste can go in your carry-on baggage. Basically, you are allowed to bring liquid items that are no more than 3.4 ounces, or 100 millilitres. All liquid items in your carry-on luggage must fit in a quart-sized bag. This should be a clear plastic bag, so TSA agents can easily look inside when you cass through the airport security checkpoint.
What if my prescription toothpaste is bigger than what’s allowed by TSA’s 3-1-1 rule?
TSA rules have exemptions for travelers who must bring prescription toothpaste in their carry-on luggage. Here’s a link to TSA’s website for more information. It’s a good idea to let the TSA agents know you have prescription toothpaste in your carry-on luggage when you first arrive at the security checkpoint. This will allow the TSA officers to examine your tube of toothpaste. If you forget to flag your prescription toothpaste to airport security, you might be subject to additional screening.
Why is it a good idea to pack my tube of toothpaste in my carry-on baggage?
Well, first of all, because you’re allowed to! Toothpaste is specifically mentioned in the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, and TSA agents are used to seeing toothpaste passing through the security checkpoint. As long as you respect the size limits, and put it in a clear bag (a resealable bas is always a good idea), you won’t be subjected to any additional screening. But the most important reason for packing a tube of toothpaste in your hand luggage is the likelihood that your checked baggage gets lost. There’s nothing worse than arriving at your final destination without a tube of toothpaste and all the accompanying necessities from your toiletry bag. I therefore always travel with a travel size toothpaste in my carry-on luggage.
Where do I get travel-sized toothpaste tubes?
I always used to visit my local pharmacy for common travel items like deodorant, toothpaste, etc. I would head straight to the travel section to buy those mini-sized containers, as I didn’t want to go over the TSA liquid limit. Over time, I discovered that I could bypass the travel section when it came to picking up a tube of toothpaste. Lots of regular size toothpaste are actually within the TSA size limits. And they’re much cheaper! It’s a good idea to look closely, as some of the small tubes in the regular toothpaste aisle are exactly 100ml, or 3.4 ounces.
Aside from a tube of toothpaste, what other important items should I pack in my toiletry bag?
Here are the other top 15 personal items, which I always include in my carry-on luggage, alongside my tube of toothpaste:
Toothbrush. It almost goes without saying, if you include a tube of toothpaste in your little clear plastic bag, you’ll also want to pack a toothbrush. Your toothbrush does not need to be stored in your quart-sized bag as it’s not a liquid product. Plus, it’s always a good idea to be able to freshen up your breath while you’re traveli
Hand lotion. A lot of people find that their skin gets dry while travelling. It’s always a good idea to carry some hand lotion. Remember that just like your tube of toothpaste, it must be in 3.4-ounce containers (or smaller).
Tissues and hand sanitizer. Frequent travelers always keep these items accessible in their carry-on luggage. For easy access, consider putting them in your shoulder bag, backpack, or in the front pocket of your roller bag.
Wet wipes. We all know that airplanes are not the cleanest places, it’s a good idea to travel with some wet wipes. Give your seat area a quick wipe down after you pack away your carry on items in the overhead bin, but before you settle into your seat.
Lip balm. Airplane cabins are notoriously dry, take care of your lips, put some lip balm in your shoulder bag or in the front pocket of your carry-on luggage.
Deodorant. It seems obvious that you would pack deodorant…but some people put it in their checked baggage. What if your carry-on luggage is all that arrives with you at your final destination? You’ll be glad you put that deodorant in your hand luggage.
Facial wipes. Facial wipes should always be included carry-on baggage. Although they’re moist, they don’t count as a liquid, so you don’t have to worry about them during the security screening process, and they can be left out of your clear plastic bag.
Prescription medication. I always say, pack your prescription medication (prescription toothpaste as well as all other prescription mediation) in your carry-on luggage! You don’t want to start out your travel without essential prescription medication, in the event that your checked luggage is lost.
Toiletry bag & resealable bag. Make sure you have easy access to your quart-sized bag of liquids, so it can be pulled out at the TSA checkpoint. It’s always a good idea to pack a few extra resealable bags for wet swimsuits, dirty items, etc. Your toiletry bag can store all of your non-liquid carry on items.
Eye mask. These are good things to throw into your toiletry bag. They’re especially useful for sleeping on long international trips.
Ear plugs. I just hate it when I’m flying internationally, and my seat neighbour stays up talking all night. Ear plugs help to drown out the noise, they’re also useful at noisy hotels.
Emergen C. I swear by these little packets of vitamin C. I take one every morning with breakfast while I’m travelling to help keep my immune system strong. Consider tossing a few into your carry-on luggage next time you travel.
First aid kit. All you need are a few basic items in your carry-on luggage: band aids (for cuts and blisters), some pain killers, sanitizing wipes. You never know when you might need a little bit of medical help.
Compression socks. Last year, for the first time, I started wearing compression socks on long international trips. I find that my feet get swollen after a whole night of international travel by plane, and these tight fitting socks seem to really help out. They’re an easy item to roll up and stuff into your hand luggage.
Blanket. If you’re going on a shorter flight, you might choose to omit this item from your carry-on luggage. However, if you’re spending a longer period of time on the plane, consider packing a blanket in your carry-on baggage. Read my post, Can you bring a blanket on the plane? for more about this.
My concluding thoughts on personal care items and carry-on luggage.
Whether you’re travelling for work for the first time, gearing up for some international travel, or looking to streamline things for your next trip, a packing plan for your carry-on luggage is always a good idea. Take a look at this article, 42 Essential Carry-On Items, for more great ideas on preparing your carry-on luggage for smooth sailing through airport security on your next trip.
